Duke of Edinburgh

Why do the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?

For the young people who take part each year, the benefits of achieving a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at any level are wide ranging and long lasting. The Award is about much more than ticking off activities as it helps to shape confident, resilient and well rounded individuals who are prepared for the challenges of adult life. Many of our participants describe it as a truly life changing experience.

By taking part in the DofE, students have the opportunity to:

  • Build confidence, independence and resilience through new challenges

  • Develop teamwork, leadership and problem solving skills

    • Give back to the community through volunteering and service

    • Discover new talents, hobbies and passions

    • Enjoy outdoor adventure, while learning to plan and navigate expeditions

    • Gain a recognised achievement that is highly valued by colleges, universities and employers

    The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is not just about completing sections as it is about the journey of personal growth along the way. Whether students go on to higher education, training or employment, the skills, friendships and experiences gained through the DofE remain with them for life.

Activities Available

Active Citizens

Our students are proud and active members of the community. Throughout the year, they demonstrate remarkable creativity and passion for supporting good causes through charity work and collaborating with those in the local community. Recent initiatives include:

  • Oxfam pop-up shop
  • Worship Group Harvest Festival
  • Christmas Charity collection (Soar Valley Food Bank was the charity of choice for 2025)
  • Sixth Form cake decorating competition (raising funds for Living Without Abuse)
  • Non-uniform/fancy dress days

We also place great importance on celebrating key events as a school community.

House Activities

Every member of the Rawlins community is a member of a House – something we are really proud of at Rawlins. Our Heads of House and Student House Leadership Team are incredibly proud of all they do and what every person in their House has accomplished, and the real sense of belonging and community that underpins what we are about as a school.

Throughout the year they take part in activities and friendly competitions to gain points for their House, these include:

  • Sports competitions
  • Sixth Form vs Year 7 ‘anything but a bag’
  • Quizzes
  • Comic Relief’s fancy dress day
  • World Book Day poster competition
  • Rawlins Summer Festival

Recent School Events

Year 8 Big Ideas Programme

Year 8 students took part in the national Solutions for the Planet Big Ideas Programme, working with industry mentors to tackle real sustainability challenges through creativity, teamwork and STEM innovation.

Their voices, vision and solutions are now part of a growing movement empowering young people to shape a more sustainable future!

British Army Work Experience

For Year 10 students who were unable to secure external work experience, we welcomed the British Army into school to deliver an action-packed day of exciting, hands‑on workshops.

Students took part in a wide range of activities, including:

  • Rock climbing
  • A mechanical challenge – building small machines using technical equipment
  • Reaction‑based challenges
  • Archery
  • Physical training
  • Ration cooking

The day also included an informative presentation exploring Army careers and the wide range of opportunities available. A fantastic alternative experience that encouraged teamwork, resilience and new skills.

BIMA Digital Day

Year 8 and 9 students took part in the exciting BIMA Digital Day with support from The Agency Works! They got the chance to learn about digital careers and tackled real-world briefs from Aston Martin and HelloFresh, exploring creativity, tech and innovation!
